Monthly baby photos at home

You can take the whole year at home. What helps is window light, a background that stays out of the way, and a baby who just woke up.
Window light
Try it in the daytime, near a window, with the light coming from the side instead of straight into their eyes. If there's a hard patch of sun on the floor, step out of it so the room stays bright and they're not squinting.
Don't use the flash, since it startles a baby and the picture goes flat.
A dim evening is a reason to wait for morning. A lamp off to the side is fine if you keep it out of their eyes.
A simple background
A plain wall, the same blanket, or a bedsheet you can use again is enough. This is a series, and a background that changes every month makes the year harder to see as one set.
Move the laundry basket before you start, or it'll sneak into the frame. A plain corner is all the background you need.
The phone
Wipe the lens, because it picks up grease in a pocket, and then the photo is soft for a reason that has nothing to do with the baby.
Tap their eyes on the screen so the focus lands there. Tuck your elbows in, or rest the phone on a stack of books if both hands need to be on the baby. Take several shots, since the face you want usually shows up in the middle of the bunch.
If a background-blur setting leaves a fuzzy edge around the hair, turn it off. A normal photo is easier to keep.
Around naps
The calm stretch is usually just after a nap, once they've eaten and before they tip into overtired. You already know the hour that goes badly in your house, so pick a different one.
The 4th works, and so does the 18th. Once the sticker is on the onesie, both still say the month.
If it falls apart, you can stop and try again tomorrow.
Safe and comfortable
Stay close enough to reach them. If they can't sit yet, get on the floor with them, because they can roll off a bed or a couch. Keep pillows away from a young baby's face.
Bring the phone to the baby, and don't leave them on a changing table or a bed while you walk off to find it.
A onesie is enough clothing. If the room feels warm, or they're flushed and finished, don't push it. The sticker is only there for the picture, so when they've had enough, you can stop.
Which set goes on the onesie
Any of the monthly sets can go on that onesie. If you stay with one design, the year looks like it belongs together, and the retailer page has the current stock.
