Baby's first Hanukkah photo ideas

Turquoise and gray necktie stickers for 3, 6 and 12 months

You can take the Hanukkah photo and the monthly photo as one picture. Put this month's sticker on the onesie, keep the setup plain, and take it in daylight, before the candles are lit.

When is Hanukkah this year?

Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4, and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12, per Hebcal. That gives you eight days to find a calm hour. A first Hanukkah can fall in any month of the first year, so use the sticker for the month they're in that week.

Thanksgiving comes eight days earlier, on November 26, and baby's first Thanksgiving photo ideas uses the same daytime window.

What should baby wear?

A plain onesie is enough. Blue, white, or a soft gray stands out on the blanket and keeps the sticker easy to read. Leave the face clear. Press the sticker onto a clean, dry onesie before you start, and peel it off when the photo is done.

How do I set up the shot at home?

Take the photo in the daytime, on the floor, near a window, with the light coming from the side. Turn the flash off. If the window is behind the baby, the face goes dark, so turn them until the light reaches the face. Baby's first holiday photo ideas uses the same setup for the other holidays.

Can the menorah be in the photo?

Yes, unlit and out of reach. Set it on a shelf or table behind the blanket, so it shows in the frame but can't be grabbed or knocked over. A lit menorah is an open flame. NFPA says a candle can easily ignite anything that can burn, and it says to keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. The CPSC says never to leave candles unattended, to keep burning candles in sight and away from flammable items, and to use flameless candles whenever possible.

If you want the glow in the photo, a flameless menorah gives it with no open flame. Blow out real candles before you leave the room, as NFPA advises.

What props are safe and easy?

Use one or two things you can set on the floor, out of their hands. A blue and white cloth napkin or a large soft toy is enough. Keep gelt, small dreidels, and wrapping out of reach. The CPSC says to keep toys with small parts away from children younger than three, and to throw away plastic wrapping and packaging right after gifts are opened.

Can I do one photo each night?

You can, but one is plenty. Take the monthly photo on any of the eight days, with the same window and the same blanket as the other months. If the week is hard, use this month's sticker on another day in December. The sticker still marks the picture.

A few weeks later, baby's first New Year photo ideas has a daytime setup for January 1.

Which sticker set should I use?

Any of our necktie sets works. Monthly Onesie Stickers has 16 ties: Just Born, months 1 to 11, One year old, and three "I can" ties. Happy Heroes has 17 and adds 1, 2, and 3 weeks. For how the month photo works, see monthly baby photos at home.
