Baby's first Halloween photo ideas
You can take the Halloween photo and the monthly photo as one picture. Put this month's sticker on the onesie. Add one costume piece if you want it. Set a pumpkin on the floor.

Use the sticker you would use anyway
October still has a month number. If this month is month 4, use the month 4 sticker. The pumpkin and the color show the holiday. The sticker keeps the photo in the year, so you can tell it from the other months later.
Press the sticker onto a clean, dry onesie before you start. Peel it off when the photo is done. Don't leave it where the baby can chew it.
Monthly Onesie Stickers is the blue, turquoise, and gray necktie set. Happy Heroes is another necktie set. Both go on a onesie the same way. Happy Animals is a third design, if you want animals in the monthly photo. The onesie stickers page lists the sets.
Using monthly stickers on a baby onesie covers which set to open. Use that page if you have not picked one yet.
Keep the costume small
A soft hat, a pair of ears, or a plain onesie in orange or black is enough. Leave the face clear. Don't use a mask. Don't use anything that covers the nose or mouth.
If a hat slides toward the eyes, take it off. If they pull the ears off, leave them off. The sticker and a pumpkin still show the day.
Skip face paint. It can get near the eyes, and it is hard to remove once the baby is finished with the photo.
Put the pumpkin on the floor
Use a small pumpkin, and leave it whole. Set it on the floor beside the baby. Don't put it in their lap if they grab and drop. Don't carve it. Don't put a candle in it. Don't put the baby inside a pumpkin, on top of one, or next to a flame.
Sit on the floor with them. If they can sit, place the pumpkin a short distance to the side. It stays in the frame, and it stays out of their hands. If they reach for it, move it farther back. For this photo, the pumpkin is a prop.
Use the light you already use
Take the photo in the daytime, near a window, with the light coming from the side. Turn the flash off. You do not need a dark room. The pumpkin, and an orange or black onesie, are enough color.
If the window is behind the baby, the face goes dark. Turn them so the light reaches the face. Monthly baby photos with a phone covers focus, a short burst, and holding the phone still. Monthly baby photos at home covers a plain background and a short session.
Three ways to set the shot
Onesie, sticker, and pumpkin
Lay the baby on a blanket on the floor, or sit with them if they sit. Put the sticker on the chest. Put the pumpkin on the floor to one side.
Hold the phone near their eye level. A photo from standing height often shows the top of the head and misses the sticker.
One costume piece
Add the hat or the ears after the sticker is on. Check that you can still read the month. If the costume covers the sticker, move the piece or take it off.
The month has to stay readable if this photo is also the monthly one. Take the hat off if it hides the sticker.
You hold them
Hold the baby. Hand the phone to someone else. Keep the pumpkin on the floor, to the side, where the baby cannot reach it.
Don't set the baby on a table, a counter, or the arm of a couch to line the pumpkin up. Stay on the floor.
If they are done, stop
A Halloween photo can wait for another day in October. Use the same month sticker when you try again. Try the next morning, after a nap.
If October passes, skip the pumpkin and take the regular monthly photo. The month sticker still marks the picture. Month-by-month baby photo ideas has one idea for the months around it.
Things you should know
Stay with the baby the whole time. Never leave a baby unattended on a raised surface. A baby can roll off a bed, a couch, or a table. If they can roll, put them on the floor.
Keep candy, loose leaves, beads, and small decorations out of reach. Don't hand them the sticker. Keep pillows and loose fabric off a young baby's face.
Take the costume off when you are finished. Peel the sticker off before you put them down to rest.
