Guides/Baby's first photo with Santa: tips, age, what to wearBaby's first Santa photo
Baby's first photo with Santa

One calm minute is enough. Go when your baby is fed and rested, keep the outfit simple, and stay close.
What's a good age for a first Santa photo?
There's no set age. Pick the pose that fits what your baby can do today:
- A young baby: you hold them next to Santa, or Santa holds them with you right beside him.
- A baby who's starting to sit: the CDC says that by six months, most babies lean on their hands to support themselves when sitting. That's sitting with support, so a lap with an arm around them works well.
If your baby isn't sure about Santa, hold them yourself and stand beside him. That photo counts too.
Is a crowd OK for a young baby?
Think about germs before you go. The AAP says newborns get sick more easily than older children, and that babies can't get their first whooping cough shot until 2 months. The AAP also points to flu, RSV and COVID-19 in the winter holidays, and to frequent hand washing.
- Ask about a quiet time slot, or a short line.
- Wash your hands, and ask Santa to as well.
- If your baby has been sick, or someone in line is coughing, come back another day.
Talk with your baby's doctor if you have questions about going out.
When should you go?
After a nap and a feed. Plan the time around your baby's day, not the other way around. Change the diaper right before your turn, and bring a spare outfit in case of spit-up.
What should baby wear?
Something soft they've worn before. Try the outfit at home first, so you know nothing scratches or pinches. Pick a color that stands out against a red suit, like cream, green or plaid. Skip big bows and hard shoes.
If it's also the monthly photo, press this month's sticker on a plain onesie. The month stays in the picture, and you can tell it apart from the home photos later. Monthly Onesie Stickers has one tie for each month.

What if your baby cries?
Take the photo anyway. If they're upset, take them back, calm them, and try once more, or try another day. Stay where Santa can hand them back fast.
Can you take a Santa-style photo at home instead?
Yes. Use the same floor and window setup as baby's first Christmas photo ideas, with one soft prop beside them. For the card, see Christmas card ideas with a new baby. For every holiday in the first year, see baby's first holiday photo ideas.
Celebrating Hanukkah too? Baby's first Hanukkah photo ideas uses the same floor setup, with the menorah unlit and out of reach.
Hanging a stocking for baby? Stocking stuffers for a baby lists what to put in and what to keep out.
