Gender reveal photo ideas at home

You can share the news with one photo at home. Put an It's a boy, It's a girl, It's a surprise, or It's twins sticker on your bump, and keep the rest of the picture plain.

When should I take a gender reveal photo?

Take it on the day you want people to know. The sticker names the news. It does not pick the day.

Some families take the photo the day they find out. Others wait for a visit, a shower, or a quiet evening at home. If you are early and the bump is still small, take the photo anyway. A side view and the sticker show what the outline does not.

If you already told a few people, you can still take the photo later. Use the same phrase. You do not need a party or a crowd in the room. One clear frame is the reveal.

What should I wear?

Wear a top that leaves the bump uncovered, in a color you can see against the wall.

A fitted shirt, a plain dress, or a sweater lifted above the belly works. A coat or a loose knit pulled over the bump hides the words. If you want one extra piece, add a soft hat or a simple necklace, and keep it off the belly. Skip glitter on the skin, and skip loose beads if a child will be in the frame. A light top, or a bare bump against a light wall, keeps the words readable.

How do I set up the photo at home?

Take it in the daytime, near a window, with the light coming from the side. Turn the flash off.

Stand in profile so the bump and the words both show. Facing the camera hides a small bump. Use a plain wall or a doorway you can stand in again. A partner can hold the phone at belly height. A timer works if you are alone. A photo from above mostly shows your face and misses the sticker.

If the window is behind you, your front goes dark. Turn until the light reaches the bump and the flower. Leave a busy shelf out of the frame. One plain object on a table beside you is enough if you want a cue, and it stays off your belly.

Keep candles, hot drinks, and glass out of the frame. If you are tired, sit and take the side view from a chair.

The same window and the same side view are on week-by-week bump photo ideas. A Christmas version of this photo is on Christmas pregnancy announcement ideas.

Which sticker should I use?

Use one sticker. The phrase should match what you know that day.

Curly Rainbow at Sunset is the Stick'Nsnap pregnancy set. It has 22 flower stickers, about 4.25 inches across, with a matte UV paper finish, black flowers, and watercolor script. It is listed on Amazon. Some name a week. The others are short phrases. Pregnancy belly stickers is the page for how that listing differs from the onesie sets.

It's a boy and It's a girl are the stickers when you know. If you are waiting to find out, use It's a surprise. It's twins is the phrase if you are expecting two. Use one of those four. Save a week sticker for a later bump photo, when the number is the point.

Press the sticker onto clean, dry skin, where the photo can read the words. Peel it off when you are done. Do not cover it with a hand, a cup, or the hem of a shirt.

What if we are having twins, or we do not know yet?

Use It's twins in place of a week number, with the same side-on setup. The words do the work. You do not need two of anything in the frame.

If you do not know yet, use It's a surprise. You can take another photo later, on the day you do know, with It's a boy or It's a girl. Keep the same wall and the same side, so the two pictures sit together.

Coming soon is the other announcement phrase, for a photo that shares the pregnancy before a gender. It is on the same set. Use it when the news is the pregnancy, not the gender.

Who else can be in the picture?

A partner can stand beside you. An older child can stand or sit next to you. Keep the sticker in the frame with them.

Big brother in training and Big sister in training are the phrase stickers for a photo with the older child. Use one of those instead of the gender phrase if the child is the point of the picture. They can hold a soft toy, away from their mouth. If they will not stay still, take your photo first, then one with them. You still have the reveal.

Stay on the floor or on a stable chair if a child is climbing toward you. Do not set them on a counter to line up the shot. If the room is loud, wait until it is quiet. One clear photo is enough.

After the baby arrives, the monthly onesie sets pick up the photos. Month-by-month baby photo ideas is the page for that first year, with a sticker on a plain onesie.
