Can you give a baby shower gift that isn't on the registry?

Yes, you can. A registry is a guide to what the parents want. It isn't a rule. Here's how to choose something off the list that they'll be glad to get.
Is it rude to skip the registry?
No. Etiquette writers agree that the gift is up to you. RegistryFinder calls registries "a suggestion and a tool to help the gift-giver," and says buying off the registry is "perfectly acceptable." The Bump says no rule makes you stick to the list. Reader's Digest quotes etiquette expert Maryanne Parker: "Any beautiful and thoughtful gift will be appreciated."
Still, look at the registry before you shop. It shows the colors and styles they like, and what they've already chosen. If they picked a stroller or a monitor, that took them weeks. Don't second-guess it with a different brand.
What should an off-registry gift be?
Small, useful, and easy to put away. The gifts that land well usually solve an everyday need, or they're a keepsake the parents wouldn't buy for themselves.
- Clothes in bigger sizes. Babies outgrow newborn clothes fast, so 3–6 or 6–12 month sizes last longer. Reader's Digest says to size up.
- Diapers and wipes. Pick size 1 or 2, not newborn.
- Food. A meal delivery card or a dinner you drop off. The Bump's readers bring this up again and again.
- Something for the parents. A robe, a good water bottle, or a recovery kit for the birth parent.
- Something for the photos. A small set they'll use every month of the first year.
If you're not sure, pick one useful thing and one small keepsake. That pair covers both kinds of gift.
What should you leave to the registry?
Leave big gear and sleep products to the parents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, flat sleep surface, with a fitted sheet only and nothing else in the crib. That rules out many cute sleep gifts: crib bumpers, pillows, loungers, and weighted swaddles. If it isn't on their list, skip it.
Car seats, strollers, and monitors depend on the car, the home, and the parents' own research. If you want to help with one, give toward the registry pick or join a group gift. To see the kinds of strollers, from travel systems to doubles, look at the gear shelf.
Why milestone stickers make a good add-on

A sticker set is small, it doesn't duplicate anything on the registry, and it gets used every month. Put a sticker on the baby's onesie, take the photo, and the month is right in the picture. By the first birthday, they'll have a row of photos that tell the year in order.
Our onesie sets are necktie-shaped. Happy Heroes has 17 ties: Just Born, 1, 2, and 3 weeks, months 1–12, and one year. Monthly Onesie Stickers has 16 ties, from Just Born through one year. If the baby isn't here yet, the Pregnancy Stickers set marks the weeks on the bump.

Do you need to wrap it?
Not this one. Our sets come in their own package, so you can hand it over as is, at a shower or as a first Christmas gift. The pouch in our photo has a To and From line printed at the top, and you can see the stickers through the front. Write both names and it's ready for the gift table.
Giving it at Christmas? Stocking stuffers for a baby pairs the set with washcloths, bibs, and a board book.
That also suits a display shower. Reader's Digest notes that some parents skip opening gifts and ask guests to leave them unwrapped, or in clear cellophane, so everyone can see them.
Should you include a gift receipt?
Yes, for anything off the registry. Even a well-chosen gift can double up with someone else's. RegistryFinder suggests a gift receipt in the card. It costs you nothing, and it lets the parents swap a size or a duplicate without asking.
If you give a sticker set, add one line in the card about how it works: "One sticker a month, then a photo." It saves them a guess.
Things you should know
Spend what feels right for you. The Bump says there's no right or wrong amount, and it depends on how well you know the parents. Group gifts are fine too.
