What can a 9-month-old do in a photo?

More than they could at six months. The CDC lists things most babies do by nine months, like sitting without support, playing peek-a-boo, and lifting their arms up to be picked up. What are five setups at home?

  1. Sitting tall. Sit them on a plain blanket by the window, and kneel at their eye level. The sticker faces the camera.
  2. Peek-a-boo. Hold a cloth over your face beside the phone, then drop it. Take a burst as they laugh.
  3. Arms up. Stand out of frame and reach for them. The CDC says most babies lift their arms to be picked up by now.
  4. The toy out of reach. The CDC suggests a toy on the floor a little out of reach, to encourage your baby to crawl, scoot, or roll to it. Take the photo as they go for it.
  5. Two things together. Hand them two blocks or two cups. The CDC lists banging two things together at nine months.

How do I make the floor safe for the photo?

Get down at their level first. The AAP says to check floors for small objects like coins, beads, buttons, pins, and pills, and to do it from your child's level.

  • Furniture: anchor bookcases, dressers, and TV stands to the wall. The AAP says children can be badly hurt when they climb onto or pull themselves up on large furniture.
  • Hard edges: move the coffee table out of the way, or pick a spot without hard edges.
  • Stairs: when your child is learning to crawl and walk, the AAP says to put safety gates at both the top and the bottom of the stairs.

If your baby likes to pull up, the CDC suggests putting them close to things they can pull up on safely. A low, sturdy couch you stay beside works for a standing photo.
